Cairn's in Iceland

Icelanders used cairns anciently to mark routes and boundaries. They are well made and it is awesome to come across them and realize how old they are.

In some places you can see an ancient line of cairns over the landscape.

This cairn even had what looked like a ptarmigan sitting on top of one.

The Icelanders don't like present day tourists building cairns willy nilly. But there is one place that they welcome and encourage you to do it. It is tradition for those who visit for the first time to build one in this site.

It is an odd site to see all the little cairns.

A few are a little taller.

We did our part and added a rock.
